There are so many different types and formulas of eyeliners that it can be overwhelming trying to find what’s right for you. The entire beauty industry is so saturated at this point, it’s hard to know where to start. Some people need waterproof versions of everything. Others don’t require that much staying power and don’t like that it’s hard to remove. Many women don’t want that harsh of a line and go for a more natural look. So much of it is personal preference.
Top 2 Favorite Liquid Liners
But in the midst of all these products, no matter what kind of eyeliner it is (liquid or pencil), what I look for in an eyeliner is all day wear and easy application. From there I’ll get more specific.
If it’s liquid – I want consistent and opaque black color along with no smudging all day wear. That line needs to look sharp all day even in the intense humidity of Florida. Sometimes…but very rarely, I’ll go for a light brown wing to give the illusion of a cat eye without the harsh black line.
I don’t like working with gel pot eyeliners. They dry out before I ever use them up which feels like a huge waste. And it involves having a separate brush that you have to clean every time. I’m not saying you can’t get a good wing with them, I just can’t be bothered with them when there’s a simpler way!
Then I look for the applicator. Here’s where personal preference comes in – do you pick a brush tip or a felt tip? I don’t like felt tips. They have never been easy for me to apply and personally, I think they dry out faster. It feels like a sponge to me and somehow gets jammed up. (Maybe I’m just challenged?) The tip always seems to wear down and eventually starts giving me a sloppy line. Even worse is the tips that are just solid plastic that go to a point. Talk about hard to apply…
Now I know I just slammed felt tips, but Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Liner is a good felt tip. It doesn’t feel like a regular felt tip. Another plus for Stila is they have a large color selection if you like wearing colored liner and want consistent results.
My favorite is the brush tip. The bristles brush against your skin and allow the product to flow evenly onto your eye. I can go for MONTHS with my favorite liner. We’re talking probably 6 months is the longest I’ve gone. That may be totally gross when you think about it, but hey, I got my money’s worth and it never failed me. I wasn’t even “trying to extend” the life or anything. It was just that good!
The liner I’m referring to is my holy grail – Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. Try it. I promise you’ll love it.
3 Steps to Your Perfect Cat Eye Wing
I emphasize your perfect wing because it really depends on your eye shape how you angle your wing. And that little detail makes all the difference. If you can’t seem to get it right or think that maybe it just doesn’t look good on you, your angle is probably off. Don’t get me wrong it still takes practice…but don’t give up hope!
Step 1
Get ready to get up close and personal with me and my eye. Then draw a line from inner to outer corner as close to your lashes as you can. It doesn’t have to be a tiny line, just make sure it’s touching your lashes.
Step 2
Angle your eyeliner brush so that it lines up with the angle of your bottom eye. It’s hard to explain – see the picture for reference. I suggest starting small. You can always extend the line if you want to go a little more dramatic.
Step 3
Flip your liner brush and drag from the end of the line to connect it back to the base line we did in step 1. Again, hard to explain. Polish off any spots that need evened out but try not to perfect it too much. There’s been many a day I end up looking like the picture above. The final touch of mascara and/or lashes pulls it all together and hides the little mistakes. Now go slay.
