I have tried many a brow product in my days of wearing makeup. I have my favorites, but sometimes I get bored and want to try new things. Usually, in those cases, I end up going back to my original go-to’s, but in some cases, I find great alternatives! Then I choose between which gives me a better value, and I try to switch accordingly.
Brow Pencils
Anastasia Beverly Hills brow pencils are unarguably the leaders in the brow game, and I have personally bought my fair share. The Brow Wiz is definitely my original favorite. It has a super fine tip which is perfect for hairlike strokes and precision. I will say my first few of these I used (years ago) had a tendency to break off in pieces if you had the retractable pencil too far extended. This means you go through your pencil a lot faster than necessary. On top of that, the smaller point means it takes a little longer to fill in your brows.
That being said, I have gone back and forth with this pencil, and the latest one I bought hasn’t broken once! So I’m guessing either I’ve learned to not push as hard when filling my brows or they reformulated to be a little less soft. Take that as you will, but my bets are on them reformulating. I don’t believe that I suddenly changed my pressure…
Then ABH came out with a new spin on their pencil – the Brow Definer is in the shape of a wedge or triangle. Same formula, just a different shape. It makes filling in your brows way faster, but the larger size can be a little less precise. If you want to be super extra like me, you can buy both and fill in the front of your brows with the brow wiz for hairlike precision, and fill in the body and tail with the other pencil.
IT Cosmetics Universal Brow Pencil is a surprising contender to the ABM pencils. I actually didn’t buy this pencil. My boss at work brought it in and gave it to me! Somehow she acquired it even though she doesn’t fill in her eyebrows…Either way, I was a little skeptical because I haven’t heard anything about this pencil.
I know IT Cosmetics makes some solid products, but it’s never been a brand I gravitated toward. I was so surprised to find that this is one of my new favorites! I really love it! The color is absolutely perfect for me, and that’s something I’ve always struggled with. Often the shades are too dark, too ashy, or too red. This is supposedly a universal shade, and it has changed my brow game.
Brow Extras
ABH Brow Powder is great if you’re looking for a more natural look, or to add an extra dimension to your brow. For me personally, this is an extra item for sure. I used this originally when I was starting out with brows and wanted something that I could build up in intensity. Honestly, if you’re a little-to-no makeup kinda gal, brow powder or a tinted gel are going to be your best bet! A natural look mixed with a heavy brow can look very harsh.
ABH Dip Brow Pomade is an interesting mix of gel and powder that gives you an intense color and great staying power. This is a smudge-proof situation right here. I’d even say it’s water-resistant if not waterproof, even though it’s not marketed as such. This product will fill in your brows fast, but you need a brush to go with it. Any of the ABM brow brushes are great, plus they have a spoolie side so if the one on your pencil breaks, you’re still covered! This brush is what I currently have. My only complaint about these is that they tend to dry out before I can use them up entirely, which feels like a waste. I think you get your money’s worth, but I hate throwing away product like that.
