I have always had a very small closet. I promise I’m not exaggerating, it’s extremely tiny. That means I have to get creative with how I store clothes. Unfortunately, there’s only so far that space maximizing items can go. This means that in order to get the most out of my closet, I have to make my clothes multitask!
I did a whole post on how to build spring capsule wardrobe, and you’ll find many of these items in there. That’s proof enough that these items will transition through the year and get you the most bang for your buck.
Who Said Your Clothes Can’t Multitask?
A girl should always always have a few good t-shirts in her closet. This includes short and long sleeve versions. The first basics that probably come to mind are white and black, but a less obvious option is a striped tee. The most basic of these are the white and black stripe (and this will be the most versatile option.) However, no one said you’re not allowed to buy more than one striped tee!
These are awesome because you can wear them by themselves, with a half tuck, or with a knot in the front (or back!) Layer on a cardigan and you’re instantly more put together. I swear there’s some sort of magic in layering basics that makes you look like you have your life in order! Don’t ask me why.
Bralettes
Bralettes are perfect for underneath oversized sweaters, or for a spring transition, under loose tanks. Here in Florida, the least amount of layers the better. That means not having to wear a full camisole under your shirts is a win. And when that item is lacey and adorable, it’s a win-win.
Some of the cutest are these from free people. I’ve bought quite a few from victoria’s secret (thinking they would be the best for people with some boobage…) I was wrong. Most of them are so low cut that there’s really no point. Sometimes the lace doesn’t hit in the right spot so you don’t see it peaking out of your sweaters/tanks. Let me tell you I am not going to wear something that cute and not have you at least see a little bit of it.
Plaid
Nothing screams fall to me more than flannels and plaid. The great thing about clothes these days are the options that you can get in plaid! This means your items are so much more versatile. In the fall and winter, you can layer cardigans or jackets over your plaid. In the spring and summer, you can wrap a plaid shirt around your waist over a t-shirt dress (this works in the fall with boots) or some shorts. Check out my post if you’re looking for some inspiration for spring dresses.
A plaid shirt half tucked (can you see the trend here? hint: half tuck pretty much everything) by itself with some denim and booties is the quintessential fall outfit.
Denim
Obviously, I’m going to include denim here. I good pair of jeans is essential to any wardrobe for any season. I just found a pair from White House Black Market that are super comfortable, soft, and not too stretchy. I love a good stretchy jean, but sometimes too much leads to them losing their shape after a few hours and no one likes saggy jeans! The pockets hit in just the right spot to be flattering to the booty and they’re a think denim so you’ll never feel restricted. AND THEY’RE ON SALE!
I would recommend having at least a boot cut and a skinny jean in your closet. Black jeans are an extra addition, not necessary but nice to have. I haven’t had a pair of black jeans in a long time but I found a pair this year and I can’t wait to wear them.
Blankets That Pass for Clothes
Aka Cardigans. Those super comfy pieces of material that you want to cocoon yourself in when it finally turns fall. These are perfect for layering over cute lace camisoles or tee shirts. (Particularly cute with striped shirts!) Cardigans/shawls are a great staple piece because even when it does not fall or winter you can use them as an additional piece to spring dresses when you occasionally need something over your arms.
Oversized sweaters are one of the most comfortable choices for fall. Paired with skinny denim or leggings and some cute boots, these sweaters make for an easy throw-together style.
These Boots Were Made for Walking (in All Seasons)
The bootie trend is still going strong this year. (I’d like to take a moment to rejoice because me and my large calves can’t fit into normal boots). I’d skip the regular riding style boots altogether if you’re on a budget because booties are way more versatile. You can wear them with dresses or jeans. And particularly if you’re in the more southern states, they’re wayyyy cooler.
Mules are a new favorite for me. I’ve owned heeled mules before, but this year I snagged a pair of leopard flats from the Nordstrom anniversary sale and I love them! I wear them with jeans and shorts mostly because they’re easy to slip on and the leopard print adds a little something extra to the look.
My last shoe staple is flats. A good flat is great for jeans or dresses or anything in between. I can wear them to work, I can wear them on the weekend. I have a pair in black and brown and they’re great for days I just don’t want to wear heels, or if the outfit more appropriately calls for flats. Sometimes you can rock a shorter dress or skirt by wearing flats because they don’t accentuate the length the way that heels do. I prefer to use this trick when I have a favorite dress that maybe shrank a little more than it should have in the wash, but I don’t want to part with it…
Athleisure
Athleisure has become such a trend, that I had to include it as a style section. The market for cute, wearable workout clothes has exploded! Leggings are obviously the staple when it comes to lounging around the house or making those Walmart/Target runs. Lululemon leggings are some of the most comfortable leggings I’ve ever worn. Expensive yes, but you can find them on Poshmark and other online places for less if you know your size! Generally, they fit true to size in my eyes, but if you go to their website you can find a sizing chart should you need a guide. They’re not see through like some cheaper versions…so you get what you pay for.
My other favorite leggings are from Gymshark. The “Fit” leggings have a little strip of a rubberized substance on the inside of the waistband and THEY’RE THE ONLY LEGGINGS THAT STAY UP FOR ME. They’re not as soft as Lululemon, but the fact that I don’t have to pull them up all the time is a serious plus in my book. On top of that, they’re much more affordable.
For tops, I’ve been loving these Adidas tanks. They’re extremely soft and easy to throw on, and they make them in a bunch of colors. Adidias even comes out with new ones every season so you can love these year round. Honestly, they’re a bit pricey for a tank shirt at full price, so I make sure to check the sale racks often or make a trip to the outlets to snag these.
