Hey lovelies! This year, in an effort to save money and simplify my closet, I’m going to tackle creating a spring capsule wardrobe. I’ve been collecting and collecting clothes while putting zero thought into their usefulness in my closet. That’s something I think we can all improve on.
The fashion industry is a constantly revolving wheel of trends and this is hard on our poor wallets, (by design). Capsule wardrobes are a perfect way to combat these trends. Investing in core quality pieces this spring – and onward – will benefit you in the long run. You’ll have more options and more closet space!
Don’t forget to click on the Shop the Look links – I’ve linked WAY MORE items than what’s pictured!
Create Your Killer Capsule
Make a list of the items you’d like based on the trends you’ve seen and your personal needs. Planning is key! This one step makes all the difference. Check out my post: Spring 2018 Fashion Week Trends + How to Make Them Work for You for some inspiration on this year’s spring trends.
Pick A Color Palette
This spring, I’m going for neutrals – browns, tans, and blues – as well as an accent of blush for my capsule. I was gifted this Kate Spade Bow Purse and I’m so in love, I’m planning my closet around it! I found this color chart on Pinterest (from a Buzzfeed article), and it’s the perfect guide to get you started.
Be sure to start with a few neutrals, and go from there. If you don’t like color, no worries! An all neutral wardrobe can make you look extremely polished and will provide you with the most outfits per items.
Decide on Splurge Items Upfront
I know. I said this was going to save you money. In the long run, it is! It’s important to allow yourself to buy those items that will last a lifetime. Be sure that they’re good quality and they’ll get better with time. Limit yourself to 2 or 3 items every season or every year (frequency depends on your budget!)
I will warn you, don’t get caught in the trap of high quality trendy items (unless you’ve got the cash! Then go for it!). In my opinion, you’re better off finding dupes for these items anyway. Save on the trends, and splurge on the staple pieces.
I have my eye on this reversible Gucci belt this year. That Kate Spade purse (on sale now!!) was also on my wish list, but I received it as an anniversary present from my wonderful boyfriend. I’d really love to pick up a pair of Valentino heels, but that probably won’t happen until later this year. (Wishful thinking!)
Grab the Basics
Always start with the basic tees, camisoles, and anything that works as a layering item. These should always be neutral base colors, in order to maximize their efficiency in your wardrobe. This increases the number of outfits you can wear with your capsule.
Make sure to include staple outerwear pieces as well. I linked this denim jacket, but a green utility jacket is another great option! From dresses to tees, you should always have a neutral cardigan to layer over everything. It gives you that effortless put together look. That’s a little secret to elevating a look. Layer your items!
For the bottoms, always have a pair of denim shorts. This can be the traditional blue denim or even white denim! White denim instantly looks like spring to me. In Florida, shorts are a necessity because it’s already too hot for pants. I usually have multiple pairs of denim shorts for this reason. A pair of khaki shorts instantly dresses up a look! If you want something other than denim, these are perfect. And they’re on sale!!
Striped tees and dresses are another item that are great for layering, while giving it that extra something. Layer it under a utility jacket or denim jacket and instantly look put together!
Leave Room for Statement Pieces & Trends
This is why it’s important to find dupes for those trendy items! Your budget might allow for one high end trendy item. The beauty of trends is that they’re created by the fashion icons, and everyone copies them, in less expensive forms. That extra money you save allows you to pick up a few statement items that will complement your capsule.
And there you have it! My tips for creating a capsule wardrobe! I encourage you to take the time to plan out your outfits this spring, and put your own twist on it. Pick your favorite trends and have fun! Rinse and repeat next season…

I love this idea (to choose a palette and stick to it except for a pop of color). Thanks for sharing.
