You scour the internet and stores looking for that item that completes the look you were going for. Most of the time I can’t find it when you want it. I’m always ahead of my time when it comes to an item. I’ll see it in a TV show or something and want it, but retail hasn’t caught up with producing the trending item. I’m sure some of you can relate to the frustration. Now it’s almost a year into moving out on my own and I finally feel like some rooms are finished.
If you’re a modern farmhouse/rustic farmhouse kinda decorator, you should know by now that the target Hearth and Hand line by Magnolia is basically a gift to us. 90% of the time they will release an item that is exactly what I was looking for. And lately some products are a cheaper alternative to regular Magnolia items. Score!
Lather Rinse Repeat
I’m a big fan of two specific rooms in the house. The bedroom because sleep is wonderful, and the bathroom because I am a firm believer that a long bath melts all your problems away. Because of that I tend to focus my decor attention in these rooms.
Technically I “finished” the bathroom awhile ago, but I found some new items I really love that bring it together even more. I had a bright yellow lemon shower curtain that was a wonderful pop of color. Alongside was a matching lemon rug that said “squeeze the day.” It’s not possible to step out of the shower and not smile. However, the rug was a little small for the area and that meant I needed two rugs, which didn’t match. Some people like the mix and match look, and while I can appreciate that style, I at least need it to be cohesive.
Now that I found this shower curtain from target, I of course needed a new rug. Duh. That’s the law of home decor. One item leads to another new item and it’s a vicious cycle we all know and love. Now my bathroom is a decent size but finding two matching rugs for it proved difficult. I couldn’t fit a regular sink sized rug in front of the shower/toilet. That meant I’d have to settle for one of those generic toilet hugging rugs. I didn’t like that either because it didn’t cover enough of the floor where I’d step out of the shower. In the end I opted for a runner that perfectly matches the gray thread running through the shower curtain.
Now that you’ve heard my riveting story about my quest for the perfect rug, I’ll walk you through the rest of the items in my bathroom. Starting with the shelf, the top sign and the little glass containers holding cotton swabs and rounds are from Hobby Lobby. The basket is from somewhere I don’t remember. It’s a basic basket so I’ll link some similar ones below. The shelf is from Target. It actually anchors to the wall so it’s more sturdy! I didn’t do this since it would mean drilling new holes into the wall. (And because it’s more fun to live on the edge…) The waste basket is also from Target.
On the wall I have my towel hanger that my mom custom made with iron hooks and a piece of wood. Apartment hack: remove the fixtures they have up there like towel racks. If you’re DIY savvy (or know someone who is) you can make a replacement and plan to use the same holes in the walls. Or remove them from the wall and put something in front of it like the shelf. It’s sitting in front of the holes from another towel hanger.
The vase is from Magnolia last year, they don’t have the same ones anymore but I’ll find some alternatives. Same goes for the olive branches. They’re from Magnolia. I really love their faux plant stems. I have bought new ones every season for this vase, so now I can change them out. I don’t mind paying extra because I feel like they’re very well made and look realistic. I find a lot of the Hearth and Home Target stems look fake.
You’ll also spot my skincare sitting on the counter. Once I work through some excess items and find a routine I like, I’ll do an updated skincare routine. Right now it’s pretty close to this post I did previously on my skincare routine. I still love these products but I’m aiming for a much more simplified process. This year is all about low maintenance and a journey toward minimal living. Stay tuned and shop the links below.
