Cut the Chemicals
Let’s go non-toxic for the new year! Ditch the harsh chemicals hiding in your skincare and save the environment along the way.
In 2018 I took a good look into my skincare and I invite you to do the same. It’s honestly terrifying the chemicals they put into some cosmetics these days! Most of us get caught up in the newest foundation, or the latest wrinkle smoothing/skin clarifying product that claims to be a magic potion.
These miracle products are never as they seem. While yes, they may change the appearance of your skin, it’s usually caused by harsh chemicals that could cause varying issues with repeated use. No, I’m not saying that one use and you’re giving yourself skin cancer. However, I am saying that years and years of a toxic foundation sitting on your skin for hours on end could cause problems. That’s why it important to follow your mother’s advice and always take your makeup off at night. I’m not perfect either. I have a few products that might be considered “toxic” but I love them and I can’t part with the way they make my skin look just yet. Baby steps… I do ask that you join me in switching out at least one toxic product in your regime for a clean product. The results might surprise you! If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few ideas:
Natural Deodorant
Let’s get personal. It took me a long time to hop on board the natural deodorant train. I’m an oily and *damp* individual. I don’t sweat like a pig, but I have damp hands most of the time. Gross, I know. My boyfriend actually compared them to deli meat. LOL. It’s a good thing he loves me. But I digress… The point of natural deodorant is to get away from the aluminum and other chemicals in traditional deodorants that are needed to be an antiperspirant. (if you want a full post on natural deodorants comment below!)
My favorite is Doterra’s deodorant. It keeps you odor free without being overpowering. (Because no one wants to actually smell their deodorant like a perfume.) You do have to go through a Doterra wellness advocate for this, but there’s no pressure to sign up or anything. You can just purchase your item and be on your way if that’s what you want! Click here to purchase.
There are many natural deodorant brands out there but I can’t promise that what works for me will work for you. I’ve tried Native deodorant, and while I liked the product and the scents, it didn’t work for me. Even in giving myself time to “detox,” it didn’t mask odors well. Yes, you must give yourself a grace period of detoxing from antiperspirants before you can judge a deodorant! I invite you to start your natural deodorant journey this 2019.
Essential Oils
Oils are a big topic right now, and I’ll be doing a post on essential oils 101 so be on the lookout if you’re interested. They’re so versatile because in addition to being used as a room fragrance, they can replace your cleaning products and even medications i some cases. The power of pure essential oils is amazing, and the more research that is done on them (and my own personal experimentation) increases my belief in their effectiveness.

Reduce your Waste
I won’t go too into detail here because most of these are a known fact, but I think they’re important to remember! Starting by ditching plastic water bottles. There are so many reusable and adorable water bottles at this point that there’s no reason to still buy packs of plastic bottles (other than for emergencies.)
Next is reusable straws. I don’t know why, but I love straws. They make me drink more, and who doesn’t want an easy way to get their daily water intake?! I’m not a fan of paper straws because they get soggy, but I have some metal straws and they’re on my list of new favorite things. It even included some bent ones that totally give me the same excitement as plastic bendy straws.
Finally, grab yourself some reusable shopping bags. Again, there are adorable options and they’re inexpensive. Plus you can stop shoving plastic bags inside that one overflowing plastic bag you have hanging somewhere. (I know you do).
